Dynamic Movement Orthosis (DMO) in the Management of the Neuromuscular Patient

Purpose:

To introduce the concept of The Dynamic Movement Orthosis—a tension based, form fitting orthosis used in the orthotic management of the neuromuscular patient.

At the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • Identify indications and contraindications for applying the Dynamic Movement Orthosis
  • Demonstrate proper donning/handling techniques
  • Design an individualized orthosis with the correct paneling to insure the optimum patient outcome

Who should attend:

  • Orthotists, Physical Therapists, Physicians and Residents that treat neuromuscular patients

Chapter 1: Dynamic Movement Orthosis: An Overview

  • 1. Introduction (lecture)
    • Introduce instructors and course participants
    • The purpose of the course is outlined and methods described
  • 2. Theoretical background (lecture demonstration)
    • Overview of the research that has been done to justify the use of the DMO
    • Patient Dx: GMFCS/MACS levels definition
    • Define Proprioception
    • Proprioception improvement with the DMO
    • Demonstrate practical application by showing video

Chapter 2: Patient Evaluation: Developing the Treatment Plan

  • 3. Evaluating patients for a DMO (lecture/demonstration)
    • Initial evaluation, posture assessment
    • Clinical manipulation of the trunk and body segment
    • Measuring technique
    • Panel selection – do not “over cook” the DMO
    • Documentation in Athena (internal key words for documentation)
    • Coding for the DMO
    • Ordering the DMO - review ordering on line

Chapter 3: Fitting and Follow Up: Implementing the Treatment Plan

  • 4. Fitting the DMO
    • Proper donning
    • Panel evaluation
    • Weaning in/wear schedule
  • 5. Follow up –building a program
    • Common adjustments to maximize correction/fit/ability to wear the orthosis

Chapter 4: Physical Therapy: Clinical Assessment, Goal priority
